Derby Themed Non-Alcoholic Mint Juleps

It may be the fastest two minutes in sports but the Kentucky Derby is truly an all day event celebrated all over the world.  From the hat to the outfit you choose to wear, the place you will be cheering on your favorite horse, the Kentucky Derby can be a tricky time of the year for individuals who may not want to have an alcoholic beverage in their hand. For myself, I gave up drinking alcohol nearly three years ago. It is no secret that one of my biggest fears prior to my last drink was the thought that I could never participate in all the fun activates that happens the first week of May in Kentucky. Therefore, I have taken the time to create a can’t miss, tasty, non-alcoholic beverage menu for your derby themed party. This is the derby mock-tail list for all the ME’s and my countless friends who have been pregnant during derby season, my friends who simply just don’t drink, or for all the individuals who choose to drink responsibly derby day.

The Mirabelle Strawberry Mint Julep

  • 3 large strawberries
  • 3 mint leaves
  • 2 ounces Ginger Ale

The Farm Girl Mint Julep

  • 6 mint leaves, rinsed
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 c. cold water
  • 3/4 c. lemon juice
  • 4 c. fresca (or any flavor of lemon-lime soda pop)
  • 2 c. ginger ale

Disney Lands Mint Julep

  • 1 Mint, leaves
  • 1 Pineapple, slices
  • 6 oz. Lemonade concentrate
  • 3 tsp Lime juice concentrate
  • 4 tbsp. Crème de menthe syrup
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 3 cups Club soda
  • 1 Maraschino cherries

For a true Kentucky spin on our favorite Derby time drink try using Ale-8 for your ginger ale, a Kentucky classic.  While Ale-8 is great, if you're anything like me, derby time is really more about  showing off what Kentucky is really all about to your family and friends.  Nothing says that more than with a one of a kind Mint Julep at your party! For this I would suggest sourcing out one of our local ginger beers made right here in Louisville such as Butchertown Ginger Beer made by Copper & Kings. Then head over to one of my favorite stores, bourbon barrel foods, or shop online at bourbonbarrelfoods.com where you can find gourmet Bourbon Sugars that would be perfect to bring your mint julep to life with a bourbon sugar rim.

Just remember:

The minute you start letting what other people think about you affect how you act and behave, is the minute you stop being yourself. With that said, I'll admit, damn it feels good to cheers your friends with a tasty drink in your hand poured into the same glass as everyone else. So do your friends a favor and make a tasty non-alcoholic Mint Julep for your next Derby party!
